I think one would have to be hyper-sensitive to read this as criticising an unemployed black man in Alabama. The target of this satire is idiotic bankers who know nothing about the products they are peddling, and caused a massive financial crisis through their stupidity and greed. The difference between British and American humour again, methinks.

They’re not saying the unemployed black man in Alabama is untrustworthy, they’re saying that he’s been taken advantage of by mortgage brokers and that when he almost inevitably fails to pay for the mortage he can’t afford and shouldn’t have been offered it was always going to screw the markets because bankers didn’t care their castles were built on sand.

While I did find the sketch spot-on, clever, and funny, I would like to point out that equating the mortgage crisis with an unemployed black man in Alabama comes across as a little tone-deaf in the United States, where using African Americans as a synonym for untrustworthiness is… not on. Hagar7’s point is taken. Still: very funny and otherwise subtle sketch.

What I meant by saying “I’d rather be here than somewhere like China right now…” I wasn’t talking about how their economy is clearly winning against the recession. I mean that when it comes down to it – I’d rather be unemployed in USA than live in a country in which freedom of speech is discouraged and a joke of a human-rights records appears to be totally fine with the “government.”

That has absolutely no relevance to what they are talking about. The international banking systems work as a whole in general so economic systems don’t affect what’s going on, at least in USA, Western Europe and most places.
In all fairness, I’d rather be here than somewhere like China right now…
