shoe girl asked:

I am moving home to Hawaii this summer and I am trying to find a reputable, reasonably priced moving company that will ship a small amout of items from New York to Hawaii. I would like to hear recommendations from people who have had experience with specific companies or services.

I will only be moving items for one person and there will be no furniture or large items. I estimate that there will be about 4-5 boxes of stuff. It will mostly be clothes and personal items, such as pictures and decorations. Thanks in advance for your help!

I would ship the boxes via FedEX or UPS. Shipping may be less costly than moving it any other way because once they get to California they will have to flown or shipped on a boat which could take a long time to get there! My husband is having his shipped by boat (because the military is paying for it) and he won’t receive his items in South Carolina until late June/early July. If you are just shipping clothes and stuff I recommend you put them in boxes and wrap fragile things in bubble wrap and drop them off at the UPS store or FedEX if you want them there quicker.

Well to tell you the truth, there aren’t any companies that move you directly to Hawaii. I just moved here from North Carolina and My household goods were handled by Three different companies. With the minimal amount of boxes I would suggest shipping via USPS, Fed Ex or UPS. But here in Hawaii the best company to use is Royal Hawaiian Movers. If you contact their office you should be able to get a recommendation to another company that they have an affiliation with like Mayflower. But, If you use a moving company you can expect to be without your items for about 30-45 days. My other idea would be to pack 3-4 LARGE suitcases and pay for the extra baggage when you fly and ship what you cannot fit into the bags, that way you have your more necessary items on hand when you touch down. My move from NC to HI including two cars and a 1200 SF Apartment ran $24,000.00!!! SO pack what you need and leave the extras at home….

TRY DHL (part of Danzas)

then:

above to compare prices.

Also if you are able to pack everything on your own, you can try to ship via “air cargo” through a freight forwarder o directly with the airline.
