It’s relatively simple but you need either a wireless router or an ethernet cable plugged into the back of your PS3 and the other end to go into your modem/gateway/router.
Basically, your home network needs to connect to the internet with a modem or router. This will be a small box with lights on the front and will have several holes on the back for an ethernet cable. You need this plugged into your PS3 if it is NOT wireless. If it is a wireless router you don’t need to wire it in – you can use wireless. The way to tell if your router is wireless is that it will have an aerial or two poking out of the top of it.
Everything is automatic once you have the right stuff. If you think you have a wireless internet router then it is set up on your PS3 like this…
Go onto the main screen and move the icon along to the settings section. Go down to network settings and then to set up new connection and go through it all on ‘automatic’ settings. It should be fine. If you still have problems then it’ll be something like your router not dishing out IP addresses automatically, in this case you will have to get a PC network nerd to access your modem (using an internet browser) and change the settings to give your PS3 an IP address.
I hope that helps. In a nutshell, make sure you have the equipment for them to talk to each other, then try automatic settings on the PS3.
Good luck!

Go with what mrrandypandy74 said. I just want to add to that.
You said you’re not sure what a wireless router looks like. Here’s a picture of one:
and you should be able to find them at your local electroncics store, like best buy or circuit city. It’s really pretty simple, all you have to do is set up the router and your PS3 (along with any laptop, ipod touches, nintendo wiis, ds’s, and psp’s you might have) will be able to hook up to it wirelssly.
