I would like to find some good advice for someone who is not very good at managing her finances. This person has had some major repercussions as a result including a foreclosure, vehicle repossesion, and many problems with collection agencies. Currently this person is facing possible wage garnishment and is looking at filing bankruptcy for the second (!!) time. I strongly believe that if she files bankruptcy it will only mask the real problems that much longer so what she really needs is some good advice. If you know of any good websites, or have any good advice, I would appreciate your input.

i like bankrate.com – they have a low-key approach to PF. Its written by a bunch of former reporters, so its pretty readable. they cover debt, debt management and budgeting pretty well..

The first step is always to set up a working WEEKLY SPENDING PLAN. I wrote about that subject on my own personal finance blog here:
Check it out, but especially check the links to other blogs there in the right-hand column. Frugal Babe is a good choice for the person you describe and has even more links to other folks getting their financial lives in order. MOST personal finance blogs will link to other blogs as well, so just leap from one to the next until you find a few with the right style.
Meanwhile, don’t short-change the public library. For someone just getting started with personal finance, check out books by Suze Orman.
On the radio or via podcast, check out Dave Ramsey ( ) who offers great no-nonsense advice about getting on the straight-and-narrow with regards to money.
Good luck to your friend!

What she needs is to learn to budget and I would say based on one and possibly two bankruptcies, she may not practice what is painful which is self discipline. is a starter site. is a good site to see what her goals should be.
Here is what she is going to have to do to get it under control:
and there are a zillion other sites. But, leading the horse to the well and getting it to drink are two different matters!
