I was assigned a project today. This project is a debate and my group and I have to argue over our topic assigned. The topic is to legalize gambling. What are the benefits of legalizing gambling? Any answer would be good. Thanks!

Both the Catholic and Jewish traditions traditionally set aside days for gambling, although religious authorities generally disapprove of gambling to some extent. Gambling can have adverse social consequences. For these social and religious reasons, most legal jurisdictions limit gambling. Some Islamic nations prohibit gambling; most other countries regulate it.

Well aside form the obvious income for the government via taxes. You can also argue that by legalizing it you can regulate it and bring in a greater amount of accountability for those who run the gambling.

I’m going to assume you’re referring to internet gambling, as gambling is available in the United States in many states.

First, the taxes earned on the winnings (both from the players as well as the income from the casinos) go toward a number of good things – education being a chief one.

Second – Keeps the money on-shore and in American hands, creating American jobs. If internet-gambling is still illegal in the United States, people will gamble with companies located in other countries making THEM billions of dollars instead of us.

Third – If the government legalizes internet gambling they can regulate it, which means it will be safer for the player. There will be no worries that an unscrupulous company located in a distant country will just flat out steal your money. The government could make sure the games are fair and honest.

Those are the biggest three reasons to legalize internet gambling.

As for just legalizing classic gambling in a casino located in your local city, the main benefits are the increase in taxes, increase in jobs, and increase in tourism (which in turn creates more taxes and more jobs). The chief complaints are that the areas near casinos tend to have higher crime rates than places without casinos – people tend to come to the casino and get a little too drunk and then make some bad decisions. You tend to see an increase in alcohol-related offenses, such as DUIs, minor thefts, sexual assaults, etc etc.

Gambling at the casino for me is very relaxing and fun and its just a good time to have. And if you live in the area with the casino, the taxes the casino gets makes that areas living better.

It brings in new revenue, at least temporarily and, in some cases, over a longer period of time.

On of the great weaknesses of American politics today–and one of the reasons for public cynicism toward those of us in politics–is our eagerness to tell people only what they want to hear. Polling is a huge business, and if a poll suggests some stand is unpopular, too many find a convenient way of changing course, even if the public good is served by the unpopular action.

An area of high sensitivity is taxation. That problem is compounded by the fact that at the national level no other industrial nation–with the exception of Israel–spends as much of its taxation on defense and interest as does the United States. These bring no direct benefit to people. Citizens of Germany, France, Great Britain and other nations pay much higher taxes, but they see health care and other benefits that we do not have. In addition, their parliamentary systems make it easier to make tough decisions than our system does.

So when someone comes along and says, “I have a simple way to get more revenue for you, and you do not have to raise anyone’s taxes,” that has great appeal to policy makers who must seek reelection. Those same people say to the policy makers, “Not only will I provide revenue for you without taxation, I will be very generous to you when campaign time comes.” And they are.
