What are the procedures for a minor traveling internationally from the US to India without a guardian?

Taylor L Caulfield asked:

My daughter is 17 and will be traveling from the US to Mumbai, India this month. She has a passport and will be traveling with an adult family friend. Does she need any paperwork or anything besides her passport and visa?

I’m asking because when she traveled alone to Canada, my husband and I needed to sign and notarize a document proving that she had our permission to leave the country alone. However, she was not with an adult, and this time she will be.

She will be flying on Japan Airlines, if that makes a difference.

This is something you can find out from the Embassy of India. If you are in the US, call 202-939-7000.

Yes you need a visa. There is a great web site CIBT.com that I use for my work. Thay have many answers there for papers as well as shots ,warnings etc.

I don’t think they will do anything special for her. When I flew to Italy by myself when I was 14 my parents had to pay $90 for a flight attendant to accompany me to and from the gates and they got to go through security with me. When I was in Italy though, the airline didn’t make my dad pay the fee on the way back and I was basically on my own. Minors can fly unaccompanied internationally when they are 16, I believe. Just make sure she is prepared, and you can let the ticket agent know when she checks in if you want someone to keep an eye on her, but she is a big girl and can probably find the gates and stuff by herself!

Edit: I just saw that you said she will be with an adult. I don’t think there will be any big deal at all.
