African cichlids are from the African Rift lakes which are a very rocky environment. Make sure to put in lots of caves too. They like to hide.

Answers can vary with the lake location of the cichlid, however most available stock with be from rocky area’s. The Happier the fish the better its health and colour, I’d advise using non-porous and clean stone covering the whole back wall and at least one side. Slate is best for creating caves and comfortable environments. However ensure the rock is extremely clean with no residue and that your structures are very stable, you don’t want a avalanche to break your tank or crush your fish.
Do not us driftwood, these fish need hard water and the tannic acids in the wood will discolor the water and lower the PH.
Don’t bother with plants, they’s be destroyed, eaten or just dug up and left to die.

Rocks with holes in them. Like skulls and such.

Research on where they normally live.
eg, if it lived in the sea then imitation coral, lots of weed and places to hide etc…

with africans use rocks and driftwood to decorate, that’s what their native habitat looks like

I put rocks, driftwood and terracotta pots in my tank

Africans like to have lots of hiding spaces. I like to use clay pots as they are cheap. Simply buy a bunch of 4″ and 6″ pots. Then carefully use a hammer an screw drive to break out some of the lip. I try to have a 2-3″ opening.

Then drop the pots in upside down forming a cave for the fish.

You can also simply create a bunch of caves with rocks in the tank.

They really don’t care about plants or driftwood.
